Mississippi

I am always up to try new things. Usually, I am in Mississippi when I try a new food of some sort. I had my first fried okra, deep fried fish sticks, butter beans, purple hull peas and pear salad. (Thank you, Ms. Gwen!) I know…where did I grow up? North! The eating is different there! Anywho, LOVE. THEM. ALL! This year, I tried a fruit called a Muscadine. It is shaped like a cherry and colored similar to a light red grape. It is sweet and juicy. However, it is a lot of work to eat!
The little stem hole is where you have to suck out the meat of the fruit. The skin is bitter apparently. I didn’t care to find that out for myself so, I peeled back the skin around that hole and worked out the meat. Very nice flavor, but then I found seeds! What? All that and now seeds!?!? There wasn’t just one. There are at least 3 and sometimes 4 or 5! I am not convinced it is worth the work. I am going to enjoy the Muscadine jelly Ms. Claudia gave me though! She says there’s no seeds.
I actually left with several other homemade jellies, as well.
Blackberry, Strawberry and Plum. Thank you, ladies!
